My name is Mitch, I live in the UK and I'm a man in my 40s. As a child, I could perform a trick of sorts to freak people out by leaning on my arms and showing my elbows bend beyond a normal person's range. I would also sit with my legs in a W on the floor in primary school whilst other kids sat cross-legged. It wasn't something myself or my parents though too much about. I first started experiencing back pain when I was sat in my lectures in university. I went to see a chiropractor who adjusted my back and suggested that one of my legs was shorter than the other which could be causing stress on my back. Throughout my early 20s I experienced frequent back pain when sitting for long periods of time. I saw various chiropractors, massage therapists and physiotherapists, and whilst treatment and exercises given to me sometimes provided short term relief, the long term problem never went away. Then in my late 20s a new chiropractor noticed how flexible my joints were and suggested that I might be hypermobile. I was able to arrange an appointment with a hypermobilty specialist named Rodney Grahame, and he confirmed via a range of joint mobility and skin elasticity tests that I had Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. I was referred to a physiotherapist that specialises in hypermobile patients.
Since this diagnosis, I've attended hours of physiotheraphy sessions and learned exercises to easy symptoms for most of my joints. I've researched ergnomics to reduce the strain on my body when I'm sitting. I've also tried almost everything when it comes to managing my symptoms, reducing pain and improving my sleep.
The purpose of this website is to pass on what I've found to have helped on to other hypermobility sufferers. There's no cure for our condition, but you can maintain a high quality of life by being mindful of what worsens your symptoms and by finding practical solutions to reduce your discomfort. Nothing that I recommend is a magic cure that will make your discomfort go away. Also, I'm not a medical professional or expert in any way so please do consult medical professionals as I have to aid you on your journey to living with your symptoms. I'm just a normal person that's gone through 20 years of dealing with the same challenges that you're likely facing, and wants to provide recommendations that have worked for me and therefore hopefully will work for you.
Some links on this site are affiliate links, and I will receive commission if you buy the product that I'm recommending. I have genuinely tried all of the products that I recommend on this site, and the existence or size of commission has played no part in my decision to recommend them. I've tried plenty of things that haven't helped me and you won't find these on this website!
I hope my recommendations help you in some small way. I know first hand what a frustrating condition hypermobility is, and I wish you the best in finding solutions that minimise the impact of the condition on your life.
